We are approaching our 4th month living on the boat, learning how she sails, meeting many new cruising friends, fishing often and adjusting to the boat life. It’s a hard pill to swallow and realize that this is the life we wanted just shy of 3 years ago, now breathing in the salty sea life with full lungs. There is also the occasional pinch on each others forearms just to be entirely sure that we still are not dreaming. And here WE are! Living the dream.
The past 3 months have seemed what feels like a year already. We have sailed 355 nautical miles, checked in and out of 4 different countries, anchored in 9 different islands, returned to 2 of them just because we can, had my dad stay for a month and my father in law for 3 days, our first friend came to visit for a week, and caught my first big wahoo fish and let it go because of mistaken identity.
We are taking to the sea life in strides. Fallen into the relaxed lifestyle as if we have been doing it for years. We are learning to sail yet we will not become complacent or call ourselves sailors just yet. There is so much more to know before we can confidently claim the worthy title. Mostly because I don’t know the names of half the things on the boat. I will say that Warren has an act for it. He understands it, feels it and is quick to making sure the boat is moving at her best. Making improvements day by day both for the boat and us. I am amazed at how we are as newly weds, and as first time cruisers are getting along swimmingly.
I would be the first to admit that I am not that great at keeping a journal of sorts. I always start off wanting to, knowing how amazing it would be to look back through it years from now and re read and remind myself about the breathtaking places we have been to and experienced. But I just find myself to into the moment to take the moment and write it down. So I am sitting down and starting now while we have a couple hour smooth sail up the coast of Martinique before we knock off another country and island. However, I am sure I won’t write again for another few months, so I can’t make any promises.
We have been in Martinique for a month now. It was a perfect combination of the French Euro lifestyle and the island Caribbean flare. I mean, what other place on earth can you dinghy up to a picturesque village with a 17th century church at the end of the dock, walk over to the bakery, grab a café (French accent) croissant and lay on the beach. It’s really all I need in life, oh that and rosé.
