WE Explore Medellin, Colombia | Episode 50
On this episode of WE|Sail, watch now, we take a week off from sailing and travel inland to Medellin, Colombia.
Our adventures bring us to the beautiful mountains of Medellin and already it is a refreshing 10 degrees cooler than the coastal city of Cartagena. We can see why they call it “The City of Eternal Spring”.
For the first 3 days we take in all the history and culture of a city that packs a punch twice its size. We cruise up to the hillside barrier communes where the home built of brick appear pilled ontop of each other reach over the ridges. We venture to Communalist 13, which is now a revamped neighborhood that was once the most dangerous city in the world, now is teaming with tourists instead of bullet holes. We use every public transportations system available as we explore every bit of the city valley floor. Everything from the metro, city trams, and metro cable cars flying high above the city from hilltop to hilltop.
Then we take a cheap $3 bus ride 1.5 hours into the countryside to a small but bright colonial town of Guatape. Here, we take a breath of fresh air high up in the mountains in a town that is known as the most colorful colonial town in Colombia. Where every door panel, street corner and even lamp post is blasted with colors. Just outside the village, we hire Colombian tuk-tuks to take us to the base of a rock that we will climb straight up for a 360 view of the entire valley. Some would argue it being the best view in the world, so we had to take a look for ourselves.
